Privacy and Data Security Guide
(64 KB) - 10/6/04

The Privacy and Data Security Guide provides information for faculty, staff, and students
related to the many University privacy information resources.

Privacy & Data Security at the University of Minnesota.

The Privacy and Data Security site provides a single point of access for members of the University community for information on privacy and data security. There are a vast number of complex privacy regulations, means for securing information, types of information and overlapping compliance programs. These pages represent a variety of ways to help you find answers to your privacy and security questions.

Oftentimes the terms "privacy" and "security" are used interchangably. It is important to clearly define what is meant by privacy and security.

Simply put:
"Privacy" = Information (either belonging to you or someone else) that is personal in nature and clearly identifys that party.
"Security" = Methods and procedures for protecting private information.
